Established in 2020, the 4321-MARKET celebrates its fifth year as a unique platform for design and craftsmanship. Inspired by the annual Christmas markets of European art universities, its origins are deeply rooted in the traditions of ECAL (École cantonale d’art de Lausanne) alumni. The market brings the warmth and creative spirit of these gatherings to Seoul, creating an engaging space for designers and audiences alike.
What distinguishes 4321-MARKET is its dedication to originality and craftsmanship. Each product is thoughtfully designed and produced in limited quantities, offering a refined balance of function and form. Unlike mass-produced or readily available items, these exclusive creations are made with intention, purpose, and a distinctive perspective. The market is a rare opportunity for visitors to connect directly with designers and acquire one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect an artistry not found elsewhere—all at accessible price points.
Every year, the market adopts a new theme to drive creative exploration.
For 2024, the theme is SONGEUN, inspired by the art gallery’s unique architectural identity and cultural significance. This edition brings together 22 teams and 28 designers whose works demonstrate exceptional innovation in materiality, structure, and design thinking.
22 Participants, 28 Designers.

Light up your celebrations with PINE MATCHES, and let the PINE CANDLE add a warm glow to your table. PINE MATCHES and PINE CANDLE take inspiration from the meaning behind the name SONGEUN, “Hidden Pinetree.” With their elegant silhouettes, both the match and candle become subtle ornaments, adding a hidden touch of joy to your table.
Pine Matches & Pine Candle Chelsea Jihong Park 2024VOID BAG is a product inspired by a circular void in the center of the SONGEUN Building. The impressive contrast between the curve of the void and the sharp exterior led to the design of a bag with the theme of the circle in the box. The bag is made of Dyneema and rope used in camping and mountaineering gear. Because it is a translucent material, the items inside are visible, so the appearance of the bag changes depending on what you put in it. This is similar to an art museum that puts new works into the building for each exhibition.
Void Bag Yesul Jang 2024This postcard is a graphic representation of the pine tree, pine cone, pine needle, pine pollen, seed, male and female flowers.
The word 葉書, meaning “leaf” and “message,” which can be interpreted as “the message written on a leaf.”
Focusing on the meaning of 松隱, hidden elements are metaphorically expressed through graphic and text.
The set consists of two printed sheets of paper with graphic and text, and one envelope.
The postcard size is 103×215mm.
The envelope size is 106×218mm.
Inseper rough, Cushion paper were used.
The postcard and envelope were offset printed with Pantone Silver C ink.
Modern Specimen: Four Seasons of a Pine Tree typehunter 2024The images are the result of the elaborate documentation of the sculptural details of the SongEun building’s in/exterior unlike typical architectural photography. They emphasize the details and textures of the architecture as if through a microscope. The artist closely captures architectural elements such as the full texture of surfaces, the corners that make up the interior and exterior, or the gaps in spaces. Then transforms and reassembles these image fragments in various ways to create the resulting images. These are printed on metallic stainless steel. Through this process, the artist presents the texture and materiality of architectural elements in a new context.
Fragments I - II - III Bahc ShinYoung 2024
Plank typically refers to a long, narrow wooden board used to finish floors or walls. ‘plank’ is a mirror that adopts the proportions and patterns of a wooden board, which can be leaned against a wall or hung up.
The wood grain embedded in the mirror blends subtly with the reflected images of the surrounding environment, almost as if it’s hidden. This aspect reminds us of the architectural features of the SongEun Art Space.
Plank Youjung Jeong & Jakob Reuter 20242025 is the Year of the Blue Snake. the snake totem is not just a decorative object but a meaningful symbol of positive transformation in daily life.
The snake totem symbolizes the wisdom and wealth, adding unique energy to various spaces throughout the home. As a totem, the snake’s graceful curves represent flexibility and vitality.
Totem : Snake 2025 Yeyeon Park 2024The Seesaw card tray is inspired by the name “Songeun,” meaning Hidden Pine, as well as from the elegant, slanted architectural forms. The design incorporates a subtle yet innovative function: when business cards are placed in the tray, only a narrow 1mm gap remains between them, leaving no visible space to retrieve the cards. Instead, pressing one side of a card causes it to tilt along the angled edge of the tray, rising diagonally for easy access. The angled bottom, inspired by the Songeun architecture, is cleverly concealed within the tray, preserving its refined, minimalist form even when cards are stored. Crafted in two types of wood—maple and walnut—the tray is available in different sizes, allowing for a perfect fit for various card dimensions.
Seesaw Card Tray Kim Soyoung 2024This project draws directly from the nom de plume of the founder of the Songeun Art & Cultural Foundation, ‘Songeun(松隱),’ which translates to ‘Hidden Pine Tree.’ The aim was to evoke the subtle presence of a pine tree, barely visible, as if concealed behind a hill. To realize this concept, a series of postcards was created using thermochromic ink, which disappears when exposed to a certain temperature. The dimensions of the postcards are derived from the facade of Songeun, while the illustrations were executed through bold, hand-drawn depictions of cropped pine needles and cones. The intentional variation in the placement of the red cones highlights the design’s clear intention to fully leverage the hand-pulled silkscreen technique and its expressive potential.
Hidden Pine Tree Postcards Miji Noh 2024Tongue & Groove and Dado & Rabbet are bookend and book holder inspired by the formative elements of SongEun architecture. The two forms are combined to show the symbolic form, and the joining methods are the 2 types of wood joints used in furniture and architecture. I have interpreted a comfortable and beautiful formative product that satisfies function, perception, and expression by Inheriting the intention of Herzog & de Meuron.
Tongue and Groove / Dado and Rabbet Kim, On 20243/21 is a bottle opener inspired by SongEun Art Center. Its vertical form and circular opening not only evoke the center’s architectural elements but are also designed for a comfortable grip and effortless bottle cap removal.
The name “21” refers to the total number of teeth on a bottle cap, while “3” signifies the number of teeth that engage with the product during use. The inside of the product is meticulously designed to house a magnet, allowing the opener to attach to refrigerators.
3/21 (Three twenty-one) Seungmok Lee 2024These leather travel slippers feature a unique net structure that folds flat for easy storage in a felt case and adapts to the foot for a comfortable fit. Made from vegetable-tanned cowhide, the leather softens over time, molding to the wearer’s feet. Designed for both travel and indoor use, only 20 pairs were handcrafted to celebrate a collaboration with Songeun. Each pair showcases an unique wood grain pattern inspired by the facade of the gallery’s pine formwork.
Net Leather Travel Slipper Yoosung Kim 2024The Tree Lighting was inspired by the spiral stairs at SONGEUN.
As climbing the stairs, the inspiration helps the designer to understand the circle of our life; it’s alike Christmas we waited for 12 month because there are precious moments at the end of our long waiting or climbing.
Life is pretty continuous like the form of spiral stairs, but aren’t we all climbing the brightly lit ‘life’ stairs because the precious moments are keep shining like the Christmas tree star to lighting our path?
Tree Lighitng Daejoong Kim 2024Haze Tray draws inspiration from the SongEun Art Center’s architectural details, translating its wood-textured concrete facade and precise directional patterns into a functional design. The tray’s surface features a subtle curvature, allowing objects to rest securely while maintaining a refined appearance. A grid-like structure reflects the geometric order of modern architecture, blending aesthetic form with everyday functionality to evoke tranquility.
Haze Tray Donghwan Song 2024“I curate works of art. Store items in boxes.
“It is the act of constructing the world through meaningful selection and arrangement.” Containers are not fixed spaces, but act in your space as objects that show infinite diversity depending on the situation and purpose. If Songeun Art Center provides the value of an ‘artistic environment’ where works can be displayed, containers help convey ‘possession and memory’ by cutting out various objects. As a vertical building, we hoped that containers of various sizes could be arranged vertically, like a space that provides different experiences on each floor, and that it would become a sculptural expression in itself. Like an architect who derives various ideas from the pine tree itself, I also paid attention to the natural object called the pine tree. Pine leaves overlapping and shaking, changing color of leaves... I want to make the pine tree in my memory into a small box and place it in your space.
What a circle of life Kim Jiyeong 2024Chapelle draws inspiration from the subterranean spaces of the SongEun building, where natural light softly illuminates the dark underground, creating a serene and sacred atmosphere. Like the architecture of SongEun, this lamp emphasizes striking contrasts: the fusion of innovative industrial technology, such as 3D printing, with the timeless craft of ceramics; the minimalist form paired with the raw texture of clay; and the light piercing through the darkness within. Above all, the interplay between light and shadow deepens the lamp’s reverent and tranquil presence. Users are invited to embrace the calm it offers, discovering moments of prayerful reflection and their own sacred time.
Chapelle Jisan Chung 2024Élevé was inspired by the process of transforming the use of vertical and horizontal elements in the SONGEUN space from architecture into product functionality. The horizontal surface, extending from the vertical circular form, creates an additional layer of space on the desk, offering users a variety of functions. Additionally, the texture of the pine tree pattern found on the concrete surfaces of the building's interior and exterior is reinterpreted through the sand-casting technique of aluminum.
Élevé Seunghyeon Yoo & Sebastiano Gallizia 2024The wood grain patterns on the walls of SongEun Art Space transform the building’s appearance with the shifting light and weather, creating a dynamic visual experience. Inspired by these architectural textures, In the Woods is a trinket box that translates this effect into etched, graphic patterns. The design captures the essence of pine needles and dense pine forests, revealing different impressions from various angles and perspectives. Within this hidden pine forest, In the Woods offers a space to keep our cherished belongings.
In the Woods Iann 2024“Grid hook” is a geometrical twist on the universal typology. Made from ceramic they come in sizes from 2-4 hooks. Compact yet generous you not only can hang items from
it but also use the connecting bar as a small shelf to display things such as postcards.
The sensuous surface of glazed ceramic soften up the geometrical shape and make the hooks fit perfectly into domestic atmospheres.
Grid hook Yeonsu & Max 2024Void, with its interplay of shadow by form and formlessness, straight and curved lines, serves as both an object and an ideal vessel for holding something meaningful.
The understated elegance of its matte white porcelain brings warmth and tranquility to any space on its own.
Inspired by Songeun’s spiral ramp, Void is characterized by its subtly concave surface, seamlessly connected lines, and simplicity hidden within its form.
Void Carson Hong 2024Momento is a stand frame inspired by the architecture of SongEun Gallery, reflecting its shapes. It captures the beauty of the building’s design while highlighting the warm texture of wood, making it a natural and comfortable way to frame photos. It can hold prints up to 5x7 inches (127x178mm). Through Momento Frame, we hope to hold photographs, spaces, and cherished memories from everyday life.
Momento be formative 2024We were inspired by the stories and characters of museums that bring to life through
diverse narratives in their simple, sophisticated architecture.
The double-sided candle holder, carved from natural marble in a sleek square shape,
offers versatile functionality, allowing users to select either side as needed.
Double lights stone Studio-Hinge 2024Paperwork is a desk organizer inspired by the silver-leafed surface in Songeun’s parking space. Reinterpreting the delicate silver skin covering its heavy concrete structure, the design uses lightweight materials—recycled newspaper—to bring architectural elements from Songeun onto the desk. Made from paper pulp cast in 3D-printed molds and finished with silver powder, it comes in four square-patterned designs. Paperwork helps organize small items like pens and business cards on the desk, adding a subtle shimmer to illuminate long winter nights.

2023: swiss-korea souvenir market
4321-MARKET is a unique gathering where the public meet new products designed by emerging designers. Starting with the first 4321-market in Seoul, Korea by ECAL alumni in December 2020, We open every year around the holiday season for a limited time, curated under a different theme. In 4321-MARKET: Swiss- Korean Souvenir Shop, 11 Switzerland-based designers and 9 Korea-based designers collaborated to create joyful souvenirs. We will continue with future collaborations.
SWISS–KOREA SOUVENIR MARKET 2023 Swiss Embassy Seoul 2023 Milan Design Week 2024Cattle Vase is a flower vase designed with a simple and delicate curved body with two vigorous horns that becomes a soft reminder of the head of the cow. The story of the Cattle Vase started from the Désalpe, one of the most well-known mountain festivals in Switzerland. Désalpe is the event to celebrate the cows coming down after spending summer days from the mountain to the plain. During the event, cattle are decorated with flowers on their heads. Cattle Vase captures this moment when cattles wear flower crowns. When the user arranges flowers on the vase, the Cattle Vase will be a cow from the Désalpe on the table.
The color and the silhouette comes from the Korean traditional vase called MaeByeong(매병; lit. Prunus Vase). MaeByoung is a vase created from the 12th(Goryeo dynasty) to 13th(Joseon dynasty) centuries in Korea. The characteristic of the vase is that it has a small opening on top with bulging shoulders, and an elongated body. Color I selected is off white which ties back to representing color of Korean people which also has a the term paegŭiminjok (백의민족; lit. White-clothed People).
Designing a product with the background from both countries, Switzerland and Korea makes the product unique and abundant.
Cattle Vase Chelsea Jihong Park 2023Cowbell Keyring is a reinterpretation of the typical souvenir from Switzerland. The Cowbell Keyring was designed with a sophisticated and mature aesthetic by modifying typical colorful tassels to the off white color and tone. Cowbell Keyring elevates the quality of the souvenir and achieves the breakthrough in the image of the kitsch souvenir shop objects.
Cowbell Keyring Chelsea Jihong Park 2023The Korean Mask Play, or Tal-Nori, originated in Korea in the 12th century or even earlier.
The performances, which were originally held to honor the gods, later often addressed
social tensions, including satire and mockery of renegade Buddhist priests and the nobility. I was very taken with the strong emotional expression of the masks and the beauty of these ancient, unique traditional rituals.
To make the figures a souvenir to take home, I decided to scale them down, keeping the predominant materials wood (masks) and fabric (dresses).
Keeping in mind the playful nature of Tal Nori, I decided to use finger puppets instead of dolls. The faces of the five selected figures are hand-stamped, a technique that allows a high repeatability without losing the uniqueness of each piece. The design of the faces is very reduced, dominated by lines and geometric shapes, inspired by the Swiss tradition of typography and design language of the 1950s.The finger puppets and wooden pieces were made in a social workshop in Zurich. The “Marktlücke” supports asylum-seeking women in re-entering the world of work.
The faces have been stamped by Anne Bachmann.

Basket-Ursli is inspired by the Swiss children’s book ‘Schellen-Ursli’. The book is about little boy Ursli's adventure to find a big cowbell in his family's chalet in the Alps for the spring procession. I like the illustrations in the book a lot, especially the scene where Ursli is wearing the big bell like a cross-body bag. I looked into the bell-making process, and it seems not very different from a bag-making process. Applying felt fabric instead of the metal sheet and using rivet instead of welding, but keeping the pattern design of traditional cowbell. For the handle strap, I add some decorative detail similar to the embroidery fringe strap of the cowbell. This Swiss cowbell-inspired felt basket will be a good souvenir for travelers because it is light and not fragile. It can be used as a small storage for daily life with little hint of Switzerland.
Basket-Ursli Yesul Jang 2023Decoration and Swissness seem to have a gap between each other, but many of the Swiss traditional items have decorative pleasure in them. I found the charm in the decorative detail on the leather strap made out of a fringe for Swiss cowbells. Fringe Socks are just simple socks but with a unique fringe loop on the backside. I wish people who wear the socks feel like they are walking in the Alps.
Fringe Socks Yesul Jang 2023
This timetable was designed its inspiration from Josef Müller-Brockmann’s 1978 “Swiss Federal Railways Design Manual.” Referred to as the International Typographic Style, this highly iconic Swiss design emerged in Switzerland during the 1950s and remains a systematic approach to graphic design that garners international acclaim to this day. With its incorporation of a straightforward grid system and utilization of neo-grotesque sans-serif typefaces, this design serves as a representation of Switzerland’s longstanding tradition of practical design. It continues to find extensive use across Switzerland even in the present day.
Departure 2024 Mingoo Yoon 2023Brilliant white (RGB 255–0–0) cross on the reddest (RGB 255–255–255) background, a foursquare flag, pure blue–𝘈𝘻𝘶𝘭 (RGB 0–0–255) sky contrasting with the red, flags symbolizing each canton, SBB clock consisting only of dots and lines. And eternal flower of the Alps, Edelweiss. These are the images of Switzerland in my memory. Also, the word ‘Switzerland’ in Korean ‘스위스’ conjures up the image of a Swiss mercenary standing tall on a mountain. I translated these images into graphics and used a silkscreen technique to express them on a foursquare piece of notepaper.

‘Round’ is inspired by the full moon.
People make wishes while watching the bright full moon.
People also make wishes on Christmas.
I imagined having a small full moon at home on Christmas.
It encourages people to say tiny wishes
when they return home and light a candle. After voicing their hopes,
They feel a sense of freedom. And they gather the energy to pursue those wishes.
Round Seungmok Lee 2023‘The Ticino’ is a creatively designed piece of tableware that draws inspiration from the shape of the Ticino wine-producing region in Switzerland and its wine culture enjoying wine. By having both a bowl and a plate integrated into one, it provides a convenient way to store different foods in each space or separate the seeds and shells that accumulate when eating olives or nuts that pair well with wine, helping to keep the wine-drinking experience more enjoyable and tidy. Naming the plate after the Ticino wine-producing region in Switzerland and designing it to resemble the shape of the Ticino region adds a unique touch to the design and meaningful connection to its Swiss cultural inspiration.
The Ticino Soyoung Kim 2023In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Korean and Swiss relationships, we created this piece as a merge of Korean’s singular textile patchworks with Swiss’ woodworking heritage.
Patchwork is a wooden tray inspired by the traditional Korean Bojagi. These wooden slats, made exclusively of Swiss wood, are graphically arranged to shape the tray referencing textile off-cuts patchwork. Switzerland is a country that contains a variety of wood species, mainly due to its hilly landscape and the robustness that growing at altitude can generate.

The Swiss-made hand-felted slippers, crafted from Swiss wool, draw inspiration from the captivating color play of goji stones. The design blends the cozy comfort of traditional “Hüttenfinken” with the distinctive shape of padded Korean socks.
Handfelted Slipper Flavia Brändle &Eva-Maria Beer 2023The Bell of King Seongdeok also known as Emille Bell, dates back to 771 A.D. and is connected to the myth of the child who was sacrificed for the bell. The casting of the ancient bronze bell with a beautiful sound was an incredibly challenging task and many generations failed. Our object draws inspiration of the myth with the intention to create an object that doesn’t directly display the bell itself but rather represents the void left by its absence. The inverted space of the bell is made accessible –visually and tactically– and serves as a tribute to the child.
Emille Bell Laurin Schaffner & Kosha Ahmadi 2023Belle is a ceramic ornament inspired by the Swiss cowbell recreating a sound from the Alps.
Belle Youjung Jeong & Jakob Reuter 2023Inspired by the natural shapes of the wisteria leaves, this artwork aims to provide an elegant yet practical object.
Wisteria Kevin Dizami 2023The metal ruler inspired by the contours of Swiss mountains, ranges, and lakes.
Its design captures the freeform shapes of nature, making it enjoyable to transfer these forms onto paper as drawing cards or for various other applications.
Metal ruler capturing Swiss landscape Yeyeon Park 2023Metamorfosis de Julio identifies the section of traditional Korean chopsticks as an active surface, altering their geometry to enhance their functionality. A horizontal segment progresses into a vertical one: the initial portion of the chopsticks, resting on our hands, remains horizontal whereas the end section is vertical, maximizing the surface to hold aliments. A subtle variation to highlight the objectual quality of these iconic elements. A line, an extrusion in a movement of continuity.
Metamorfosis de Julio Milagros Rodriguez 2023“Greetings from Korea” is a collection of 5 postcards representing different locations across South Korea. It is an elegant twist on the typical, sometimes tacky destination postcard. Korean landscapes are met with the phrase “Greetings from ...” in German, French, Italian and English, symbolising the crossroads of two cultures.

2022: table manner
Designed to amplify the moment of excitement before opening the lid. The dome-shaped brass lid expresses the aesthetics of the “ta-da” moment. When the lid is opened, a small bell hanging inside makes cheering sounds. Two types of inside surfaces, cylindrical and hemispherical, become a pleasant surprise to add on. Small twists on mundane objects can make a delightful surprise in daily life. Bell Canister can be a container for anything; a jewelry box, a serving dish, a scent diffuser with incense stones, even a lid alone as a food cover on a plate, and anything else. Leaving an ingenious encounter up to the user will extend the possibilities of Bell Canister.

HAAB is a lifestyle brand founded by an industrial designer and a fashion designer. We are always seeking a useful and interesting pairing of materials and functions like a good food and wine pairing. Our first collection including an apron, pot stand, hand towel and room shoes is made out of terrycloth to absorb moisture and cotton nylon mixed fabric to be resistant to water. Each item has a signature fabric loop detail considering the neat way to store it in the kitchen area.

It contains a witty story of a designer who imagined a plant that ate plenty of water and gained weight just like a companion animal living with people gains weight. An empty plate that can be used with a Chubby pot can become a plant stand or tableware depending on the type of object placed on it. It is a user-driven product that allows users to use anything in the way they want without limiting the functionality of the object. The chubby pot and empty plate are the result of studio iff's experimental research to explore various cmf and manufacturing techniques, and were produced by slip casting method, which is made by pouring slip into a gypsum mold.
